A Visit to the ER :: Personal Narrative, Autobiographical Essay
A Visit to the ER I did not want to be there, but visiting the emergency room was part of the local Youth Science Program. When I had first thought of becoming a doctor I was awed by the science involved. I frequently pictured myself as a "know it all" who saw patients and wrote prescriptions in an office. The thought of working in a hospital with extremely ill patients did not appeal to me. The emergency room presented the possibility of changing my mind about my career goals. I did not want to leave thinking that I no longer knew what I wanted to do. John, one of the Youth Science Program directors, handed me a lab coat. It was time to go, and in a daze I wondered if I would one day, wear a lab coat that read, "Patricia Reynoso, M.D." That day I met an Hispanic lady who had previously had two spontaneous abortions. This time she had vaginal bleeding and the fetal heart sound was not audible. Only an ultrasound would determine whether her baby was alive or not. While the doctors made the arrangements I kept her company. I did not know how she felt about me since she had only been told that I was a student who would translate for her. All I know is that at that moment, my conflicting feelings about being there were forgotten. Her apprehension over losing her third child and her inability to communicate with the people around her became my new concern. My early school days helped me relate to her situation. I will never forget the time I was sitting, Indian style, in front of my classroom. Some children held my arms against the wall while others poked fun at me in a language I did not understand. The frustration of being forced to contain my feelings inside was despicable. I was glad to be there for her at such an important moment. Her worry was greater than her pain and she needed someone who would listen to her. What made me happier was her asking me to be present during the ultrasound test. When one of the doctors said, "The baby's moving," there was no need to translate.

How can Hughes Electrical improve it market Share? Essay
Business Studies Coursework Name: ââ¬â Richard Rutter Candidate: ââ¬â 3186 How can Hughes Electrical improve it market Share? Aim: o To find out how Hughes Electrical increase its market share. In order to do this I will need to: o Research the history of Hughes. v o Plot where Hughes retail outlet(s) are in Norfolk. v o To research how location, can help Hughes, increases its market share. o Research what types of products they sell. o Find out what their target audience is. o Research the known methods of promotion. o Distinguish, which methods will be suitable for Hughes. o Recommend how Hughes can increase its market share, in the next five years. Objectives: o Find out what their performance has been like during the last 2 years. o Compare them to a successful competitor (Argos.), to see how theyââ¬â¢re differing and if they are more or less effective. History of Events concerning Hughes: 1921 ââ¬â Hughes Electrical was founded in Lowestoft, Suffolk by Frank Hughes, a young electrical engineer. 1928 ââ¬â Frank bought his first shop and the family literally lived over it for some years. 1946 ââ¬â Frank retired and his sons Peter and Jim took over the management of the business. 1950 ââ¬â Hughes was determined to get into the Television Age. 1953 ââ¬â Hughes had gained experience installing many televisions in Suffolk. 1962 ââ¬â Hughes began its expansion, when it purchases Norfolk radio in Great Yarmouth. The Hughes Company then had 5 shops all trading within 10 miles of Lowestoft and all selling or renting televisions, audio products and home appliances. 1970 ââ¬â Further expansion into the Norwich area in 1972, Ipswich in 1976 and Bury St Edmunds in 1979. 1980 ââ¬â Hughes Electrical product range has expanded enormously during the last 2 decades as video recording and digital technology opened up whole new consumer markets. 1985 ââ¬â Video cameras were introduced and with increasing miniaturisation became camcorders and lately digital camcorders. 1990-2003 ââ¬â Effectively Hughes has been using the same tried and tested methods to stay a successful business for many years, and I expect many more years to come. Hughes has evolved from: (in 80 years.) Type of organisation Hughes Electrical is a local High Street retailer based in Norfolk and Suffolk. They specialise in supplying analogue/digital multi media equipment for purchase or hire such as Television, Audio and Camcorder (electrical and audio goods). Hughes also has a large range of household electrical products (small and large white goods), which are also available to purchase or hire. They take great pride in their product knowledge and provide a full in house service facility for goods in and out of warranty. Hughes operates from the tertiary sector, this is a growing industry and Hughes is already well developed, this is a strong advantage to Hughes. What makes a business successful? In theory a business needs to follow the four pââ¬â¢s to be successful, these are product, place, price and promotion. Product ââ¬â This is the thing that is being sold, either a service or an object, the company will need a good product that sells well and creates a lot of revenue for the business. Place ââ¬â This is where the business is located, which is crucial if the company is a store, but less of crucial if the company is catalogue order for instance. Price ââ¬â The price must be fair to the consumer, and competitive, so that there will be a smooth cash flow through the business. This is healthy for the consumer and the business. Promotion ââ¬â The promotion is the way in which the business promotes a service or a product, unless the product is well known already this will be another crucial factor in the companyââ¬â¢s sales. How Hughes are successful in their product. Hughes is hugely successful in this area, they offer a full service to their customers, and this involves hiring out their goods or selling them directly. All products have a 12-month guarantee, which in this time if the product develops a fault it will be fixed free of charge. Any rented product will be installed free of charge. Customers will find this very satisfying, because they know that if anything goes wrong then they can take it back no questions asked. Hughes is well known for selling electrical goods and at low prices, this is a good market to be selling to, because the demand for electrical goods will always be big. This is because technology is ever changing, while reading the history of Hughes, I noticed that when a new product or technology is released Hughes is nearly always the first company to sell them. Hughes sell well-known trusted brand names, this works in their favour in the long run, although the product not being the cheapest available on the market, they are well known and trusted, so they are more popular and sell better. Some examples of their products are shown below: Site location: Photograph of Site: (Norwich, Castle Mall.) Why Hughes location is successful and unsuccessful. Hughes is located in the castle Mall Norwich. This is a busy shopping mal, which attracts people from families to teenagers. The shop itself is situated next to Argos and the Sony centre. All three stores are potential competitors. This may be an advantage, because they all need to attract similar customers, it also means that theyââ¬â¢re prices must be competitive to win sales over the other two outlets. Hughes is very easy to get to for customers, because it is opposite an escalator and an elevator. The castle mall has its own parking facilities, so that customers to the mall can park very close. The whole of the castle mall is under ground and which means customers can shop whatever the weather is like. The range of other types of shops such as clothes, food and services is a bonus to Hughes, because customers even going to the cinema may end up browsing through the store. Customers can go to the shopping mal and buy all of their products in one go as well. The only negative point is that Hughes must coincide with the castle malls opening hours, e.g. they are not permitted to open on Christmas day. Hughes will only loose a minute profit. I conclude with the castle mal is Hughes strongest positive side, because it helps them attract endless customers. How Hughes prices its products to be more successful. As explained in the location, Hughes is situated next-door to competitors Argos and the Sony Centre. The three stores are constantly trying to undercut each otherââ¬â¢s prices. This attracts new customers, who are interested in the low prices. Price wars are healthy to the customer, because it drives down their prices, it helps keep the businesses on their toes and alert, because they need to keep their costs down to make a profit. Hughes has got their pricing perfected, customers browsing the store notice this, and always come back. How Hughes is successful in promoting its products. Here are some of the known methods of promoting a product: * Price promotions. * Commercial Advertising (Radio, Television, Newspapers.) * Coupons * Competitions and prizes * Frequent user / loyalty incentives * Point-of-sale displays ââ¬â where the product is placed in the store Promotion is the area in which I think Hughes needs to improve. I believe Hughes is badly advertised and has little publicity. My questionnaires primary reason is to find the public awareness relating to Hughes. Primary Research Primary research is a type of researching. This method of research can be very time consuming. The different primary researches are: * Questionnaires * Interviews * Experiments For my primary research I have decided to compile a questionnaire, as it is effective and easy to make and distribute, because I will only need to question two people. I will distribute it to the manager of Hughes. I will distribute another to a competitor of Hughes (Manager of Argos Castle Mall.) Example Questionnaires. Questionnaire (Manager of Hughes.) Secondary research is research, which has already been carried out. It comes in two separate forms, internal and external. Internal sources Internal research has already been collected, by the company and is free and easy to use. External sources External research is research, which has taken pace outside of the business, it has no purpose and so is a very general guide. External resources I could use: * Newspapers * Internet * Magazines * Library Secondary research is very cheap and easy, I have decided to look on their website to find out a little more about Hughes, as it may help me to make recommendations. Online transactions are better than the conventional manual transactions Online transaction or online banking, which is a process of entering into transactions by a particular client and the bank using modern technology. Nowadays, with modern technology such as computer and mobile phone, people can do the online transaction at anytime and from anywhere. However, do we really know whether online transaction is beneficial? Even though most people think that online transaction is more risky than manual transaction.I strongly agree that online transactions are better than the conventional manual transactions. This is because online transactions are very convenient, and it is also unlimited service day and night. Online transactions are very convenient to all. Online banking is a easy process. You can do any transaction that you wish to do with the banks or clients, no matter you are in office or home. Besides that, online transaction can be a easy way to us to make bill payment. Through this system, you can pay the bills by transfer funds between accounts. Therefore, you do not have to queue up to pay your bills. This also can help you to save more time to do other things. The system also will keep the transaction records so that you can easily refer your transaction. This also can help in reduce the use of paper. Thus, online transactions are quite convenient to all. Another reason why online transactions are better than conventional manual transactions are because online transaction system is unlimited service day and night, it is operates 24 hours per day.The online transactions are always available seven days a week, 24 hours daily and 365 days a year. Every transactions can be done by using your computer or mobile phone and internet connection. In addition, online transactions do not have time constraint. Online transactions unlike the manual transactions, which are you need to do transactions during the office hours. With online transactions, we do not need to run off from our works to go the bank. As mentioned before, online transactions are available all the time can help you to cut off the time to go to banks.Nevertheless, some people think that manual transactions can avoid system trouble. This is because online transaction is relies on internet connection. Without internet connection, you cannot access to do online transactions. Due to slow internet connectivity, this can creates a problem that whether your transaction was successful or not. However, I strongly disagree with all these views. I think bank have precautions to help their customers to solve this kind of problems due to the internet connection or server down. For instance, 24 hours customer service hotline.Assistance is provided by bank to those customer who have facing problems during online transactions. In conclusion, online transactions are better than the conventional manual transactions because online transactions are very convenient and unlimited service day and n ight. Therefore, we should not have all negative views towards online transactions as online transactions are very useful and convenient to all especially businessmen and businesswomen. Having presented by my arguments, I once again totally agree on the statement that ââ¬Å" Online transactions are better than the conventional manual transactions. ââ¬

The Concept of Motivating Using Two Models Essay
The Concept of Motivating Using Two Models - Essay Example This paper illustrates five core traits that every job must possess, and these include, skill variety, task significance, feedback, task identity as well as autonomy. As the name suggests, skill variety is that quality of work that allows workers to apply various talents, abilities, and skills; a fine balance must be struck by the organization. If it gives employees too much variety, they could be overwhelmed but if it gives them few ones, then they could be bored. Task identity refers to the holistic nature of a task with regard to the whole production process while task significance refers to the quality of contributing to something beyond oneself. The five factors have the ability to influence an employeeââ¬â¢s psychological state at three levels, and these include the meaningfulness, knowledge of results and the responsibility for outcomes. Responsibility means that a worker has been given enough freedom to make changes to certain things and learn as they perform their tasks; they tend to appreciate being able to succeed or fail. Meaningfulness implies engaging in labor that means something to the worker; it should be more than a series of movements that can be repeated. This quality is paramount in creating intrinsic motivation or motivation that is only associated with work rather than with external factors; here employees see it as a means to an end. Knowledge of the outcomes is also another crucial psychological state for two primary reasons: learning and giving purpose to work. If a person knows the outcomes of their effort, they are likely to know what it takes to succeed and thus learn from their wrongs. Furthermore, knowing outcomes gives purpose to work as it enables the employee or provider of input to form an association between what they do and the outputs or clients. This means that they will not be disconnected from their work and will know that even though their roles are seemingly small, they lead to large outcomes in the company. Ã

Market Entry Project Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Market Entry Project - Research Paper Example Considering this strategy in mind Target has planned to expand in the market of their neighboring country Mexico. We choose to enter Mexico, with the idea to expand our business base obviously, to cater to their competitor Wal-Mart who is doing great business in Mexico by providing the experience of ââ¬ËLike shopping in the USââ¬â¢ (Luhnow, David), with similar purchasing trends observed in US, Low Land and Central Mexico it was easy to understand consumerââ¬â¢s psychology (Portilla, Fabiola de la), people in Pacific, North and Southeast tend to spend more (Portilla, Fabiola de la). If we look at the Nielsenââ¬â¢s survey results closes weââ¬â¢ll come across the fact that Big Supermarkets still capture a very small proportion of the retail universe in Mexico-Pacific, 26%, Valley of Mexico 30%, (Portilla, Fabiola de la), which is extremely low and reflects the fact that markets displays huge blue spaces for expansion by large retailers like Target. Consumers tend to visi t markets in weekdays in Pacific and on weekends, Sunday etc in Low Land, Central Region and Valley of Mexico (Portilla, Fabiola de la). Negligible tariffs on trade between US and Mexico is acting as a major incentive for businesses to expand across borders and become transnational in nature. Target also has the advantage of learning and getting insights from Wal-Martââ¬â¢s experience (Luhnow, David) so far in the Mexican market. Hence all the factors mentioned above drove us to the conclusion of tapping into Mexican market as our host country. The environmental opportunities which the host country offers are as follows; Economic factors, the countryââ¬â¢s economy is back on track with a GDP of 3.8% in 2011 (6 Reasons why US retailers should enter Mexico), and shows good signs of growth with huge margins of blue spaces left to be exploited by the retailers with retail sales of 5.4% by may 2011 (6 Reasons why US retailers should enter Mexico), this increased economic stability has also impacted the purchasing power of Mexicans resulting in growing confidence in retail; Legal factors, like there are very low trade tariffs in Mexico as compared to the US, the act named NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) made in 1994 and renewed in 2008 created the worldââ¬â¢s largest free market with almost negligible trade tariffs between US, Mexico and Canada (6 Reasons why US retailers should enter Mexico), hence very low legal restrictions act as an opportunity; Social Factor of emerging middle class in Mexico (6 Reasons why US retailers should enter Mexico) has given foreign retailers a hope that more people now have the power to experience a purchase in huge retail stores and with the emerging and still weak middle class discount stores can actually help the people and strengthen their own presence in the market as well. Cultural factors changes and flexibilities (Hernandez, Mariana) also act as an opportunity an opening for foreign retailers to jump into the market, thought it took time but now Mexicans have accepted and encourage foreign brands specially those manufactured or originated from US because of their own growing aspirations. Upon further analysis I would not exactly put this as a threat but a disadvantage faced by the retailers in Mexicoââ¬â¢s trade environment could be of the huge power distance (Hernandez, Mariana) amongst the people living in the same region, existing large amount of
